OverviewThe town of Elba is in north-central Genesee County, bordered to the north by Orleans County (town of Barre), to the south by Batavia, to the west by Oakfield and to the east by the towns of Byron and Bergen. Elba includes the village of Elba and the hamlets of East Elba and Five Corners. This is a farming town, rich in history and agriculture and with one of the biggest farms in New York state. Elba bills itself as “the onion capital of the world” and the crop flourishes in Elba’s rich muck land. An annual Onion Festival is held in August, with the crowning of an Onion Queen since 1947. Several family dairy farms are in town, as well as a “community supported agriculture” organic farm. Oak Orchard Creek, a hugely popular fishing spot, flows through the northwest corner of town, where the Alabama Swamp is found. Elba is only five miles north of Batavia, the commercial and cultural center of Genesee County.
