Overview The town of Bethany is on the southern edge of Genesee County, about six miles southeast of Batavia, the county seat. Bethany is bordered to the west by Alexander and Batavia; to the east by Pavilion; to the north by Stafford and Batavia; and to the south by Wyoming County. Bethany has six hamlets, including Bethany Center, where government offices are located, and East Bethany, where the post office is located. Bethany is where you’ll find Genesee County Park & Forest, which has 430 acres of forest and rolling hills, five ponds and more than 10 miles of hiking trails. Near the park is Rolling Hills Asylum, a former poorhouse and insane asylum that conducts ghost tours and claims to be haunted. East Bethany is where you’ll find most of the businesses in this rural, sparsely populated town, such as antique and gift shops. A greater variety of shopping can be found in Batavia, a quick trip from Bethany. Oatka Creek, a popular fishing spot, flows through Bethany. Local Museums/Landmarks Visitors come from all over to see Rolling Hills Asylum, a former poorhouse and insane asylum that is allegedly haunted. Genesee County Park, at the southern end of town, was established in 1915 and is recognized as the first county forest. The land was originally purchased to supply wood to the county poorhouse for cooking and heating.

Essentials Bethany has a small business district. A six-mile drive gets you to Batavia, where you’ll find retail like Walmart, Kmart, Target, Sears and Penney’s, as well as a Top’s Friendly Markets grocery store. Three school districts serve Bethany residents; depending on where they live, students attend the Pavilion Central School District, the Wyoming Central School District, or the Alexander Central School District. United Memorial Medical Center in nearby Batavia is the regional hospital serving this area. The closest library also is in Batavia – Richmond Memorial Library on Ross Street. The East Bethany Post Office serves this town and is located at 5782 East Bethany LeRoy Road.

Genesee County Park & Forest has five picnic areas, four playgrounds, baseball and football fields, and plenty of wide-open space for hiking. Like many communities in Genesee County, Bethany has an alpaca farm, Alpaca Delights, where visitors can pet and feed the animals. Nearby Batavia has a wide variety of activities, from theatre and music to professional baseball and movies and bowling, along with Batavia Downs Casino and Racetrack. Just west of Bethany, the town of Alexander has the Western New York Gas & Steam Engine Association, which holds an annual show. Darien Lakes Theme Park, the largest theme park in New York, is a short drive west.

Pros & Cons The county park and forest offer more than 400 acres of space for picnics, hikes and other outdoor activities. Wyoming County, where part of Letchworth State Park is located, is just south of here. Bethany is a quiet, agricultural community but only a few miles from Batavia, the commercial and cultural center of Genesee County.
