Welcome to Bergen, NY

Overview

Located in the northeast corner of Genesee County, Bergen is bordered by Orleans County to the north, the towns of Stafford and LeRoy to the south, the towns of Byron and Elba to the west, and Monroe County to the east. This small, rural town – the second-smallest in Genesee County – includes the village of Bergen and the hamlets of East Bergen, North Bergen and West Bergen. The village, with sidewalks canopied by old-growth trees, includes the Lake Street Historic District, with buildings with cast-iron storefronts built in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Essentials

The village of Bergen has a small downtown with a few shops, a well-known pizzeria, and other places to eat. For a greater variety of shopping, residents head to Brockport, which is only nine miles north, or to Batavia, a quick 14-mile trek southwest. Both have supermarkets (Wegmans in Brockport, Top’s in Batavia), and large retailers like Walmart. The village offers lower-cost municipal electricity..

Recreation & Entertainment

Bergen is quite rural, and activities such as hunting, hiking and snowmobiling are popular here. Rose Garden Bowl on Buffalo Road offers bowling and volleyball and has a restaurant. Small-town events like Bergen Park Days and a Memorial Day Parade are held in Bergen..

Transportation & Traffic

Route 19 is the main north-south road in Bergen, and Route 33 is an east-west roadway. Well-traveled Interstate 490, which heads east-west and connects to the Thruway, has a Bergen exit..

Pros & Cons

Small-town living and cheap municipal electricity are big draws here, as well as east access to Interstate 490. Bergen is close to Batavia and Brockport and a quick trip to Rochester via I-490.
