Overview

Alabama is in the northwest corner of Genesee County, bordered to the west by the Tonawanda Indian Reservation and the Tonawanda State Wildlife Management Area (as well as Niagara and Erie counties), and to the north by Orleans County and the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge. To the south is the town of Pembroke, and to the east, the town of Oakfield. Because of the reservation and wildlife areas, Alabama is one of the least developed communities in Genesee County, making it ideal for outdoor lovers.


Essentials

For most of their shopping needs, residents will head to Medina, a short 8-mile drive north, where you’ll find a Top’s Friendly Market grocery store and an historic downtown with a variety of shops and restaurants. Batavia, a quick trip southeast, has a wide variety of stores, including Walmart, Kmart, Sears and JCPenney’s. The Oakfield-Alabama Central School District serves this area. 



Recreation & Entertainment

This is an area for hunters, fishermen and – women, snowmobilers, hikers, and others who enjoy the great outdoors. The village of Medina offers a number of options in a quick drive, including a large train museum, bowling, movies and other activities. Batavia, with its casino and racetrack, baseball team and other attractions, is a short trip southeast.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 77 (heading east-west) and Route 63 (north-south) intersect in the town of Alabama. The Thruway is a short drive south.



Pros & Cons

Outdoor lovers will enjoy this area, with its state and national wildlife areas and wide-open spaces. You’re close to the historic village of Medina in Orleans County, and not far from Lockport, which sits on the banks of the Erie Canal in Niagara County, and Batavia, the commercial and geographic center of Genesee County.
